CASE STUDY
Sanitary Level Measurement
July 24, 2006
Eclipse Replaces
Calibrated Craftsman
A major private label juice manufacturer with plants across
the United States, struggled with their batch system tanks
for accurate level measurement. Their old system involved
using a tape measure from the top of the tank to the liquid
level then referring to a chart that equated the level to
gallons. This system for batch measurement was both inaccurate
and non-repeatable.
Their first attempt at Guided Wave Radar met with the same
failed results as the system was not a 3A sanitary assembly,
nor was the transmitter user friendly. Using the team approach
of ACI Controls and Magnetrol, we were able to show the
advantages of the Eclipse: a true 3A sanitary probe assembly,
a user friendly transmitter, and a 20 point strapping table
to accurately gauge the various tank in the batch network
were enough for engineering to try one unit.
After a morning installation and configuration meeting
including gauging 15 points on the strapping table, a 60-day
evaluation period began with the one unit. Only 30 days
were needed to understand the process improvements the Eclipse
gave them: accurate batch counts, less operator involvement,
and better inventory management. The resulting order: 31
Eclipses with Sanitary Probes.
