HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST CONNECTION TYPE IN SINGLE-USE SYSTEMS

Single-use systems have proven to be an effective solution for the biopharmaceutical industry, providing many benefits and process improvements. Some of the key applications that employ single-use systems include the creation of process fluid flow paths, buffer and product storage solutions and sampling systems on varying scales.

Single-use systems require connection pieces to properly fulfill the application. However, with so many connectivity options, where should manufacturers start? In a recent blog post, Parker gives insight into how to choose the right connection type. These connection parts include:

  • Luer Connector: The simplest connection type suitable for sample lines with syringe connectivity and low flow narrow-bore tubing applications
  • Quick Connector: Often used within a laminar airflow hood to create aseptic connections. This connector also showcases the added security of a push-fit feature with a secure locking mechanism
  • Triclamp: Sanitary style fittings used as connectors. Typically used within a laminar airflow hood to create aseptic connections

In order to choose the right option, you should take into consideration any safety requirements, process conditions, compatibility, bioburden control, and part suitability for the application. You should also make note of whether the connection is made inside or outside of the laminar airflow hood. This will ensure that the chosen connection device can handle the requirements of the application.

It is crucial that the connective solution is able to maintain an aseptic and sterile environment. Without the right design considerations or operative care, biopharmaceutical manufacturers could be facing costly connection failure.
